F8F-1 Bearcat USN, "Beetle Bomb", 1949 (1:72) by SkyMax Diecast Item Number:SM1004. Navy Flight Exhibition Team, Blue Angels, US Navy, 1949. During April 1946 Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Chester Nimitz ordered the formation of a Navy Flight Exhibition Team to boost Navy morale and maintain public interest in naval aviation. It was officially re-designated United States Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron in December 1974. The first public show took place in June 1946 under the lead of Lt. Cmdr. Roy “Butch” Voris, flying the Grumman F6F Hellcat. The team used a North American aviation SNJ Texan painted yellow and called “Beetle Bomb” to represent a Japanese Zero in simulate aerial combat. Two months later the team transitioned to the Grumman F8F Bearcat and the current blue and yellow colours were adopted. The SNJ was also replaced by a F8F-1 “Bearcat”, painted yellow. The team transitioned to the Grumman F9F-2 Panther in July 1949. With the change of aircraft the F8F-1 “Beetle Bomb” was relegated to solo aerobatics before the main show. It crashed on takeoff during a training show in Pensacola in 1950.
